We first met the ever-inspirational Szifra Birke in 2010 when we screened her family film project, a documentary titled Browsing Through Birke’s, in downtown Lowell. The self-produced film — an emotional, humorous look at her mother and father and their legendary Lowell clothing store — enjoyed a wonderful local screening, playing to a full house of Birke admirers and scads of locals who wanted to take a trip down memory lane. Birke’s Department Store was a Lowell, MA, institution for 5 decades, and Browsing Through Birke’s captures the store’s founders (Nathan and Sally Birke), their robust and painful Jewish family history, and Szifra’s own childhood and present memories of what is was like to be raised a “Birke.”

Since its screening here in Lowell, the film has undergone some edits and is now ready for another unveiling. It will get its Haverhill debut tomorrow morning, Sunday, October 2, at Temple Emanu-El with Szifra Birke in person to introduce the film and conduct post-film Q&A. Here is the program schedule:

9:30 AM: Breakfast
9:50AM: Introduction and film screening
11:00AM: Post-film Q&A and discussion

If you didn’t get a to experience this film in Lowell, here’s your chance to get a glimpse of a fascinating behind-the-scenes story of a most unusual retail shop in the heart of the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution!
