A great Star Wars moment, forever captured in claymation!

Dear Friends:

As of today, Sunday, September 19, the screening of “The People vs. George Lucas” at the Cape Ann Community Cinema has been postponed.
They ARE, however, offering a FREE Star Wars program consisting of various SW-related shorts. If you attend the program, ENJOY!

With Star Wars re-edits, re-issues and even a 3D re-release of the entire saga looming close (February 2012 is the now publicized date), it’s easy to see how ardent fans of George Lucas’ science fiction film world can be a bit frustrated. This Saturday and Sunday at 4:30PM, one of our most favorite indie theaters, the Cape Ann Community Cinema, devotes an afternoon to our love/hate relationship with the man and his movies with a screening of The People vs. George Lucas, the 2010 documentary directed by Alexandre O. Philippe. It apparently was four years in the making and probably helped Philippe rid himself of his own Lucas demons.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

“The passion the original Star Wars trilogy inspires in its fans is unparalleled; but when it comes to George Lucas himself, many have found their ardor has cooled into a complicated love-hate relationship. This hilarious, heartfelt documentary delves deep into Lucas’s cultural legacy, asking all the tough questions. Has Lucas betrayed his masterwork? Should he just have left the original trilogy alone? Is The Phantom Menace so bad it should carry a health warning? Utilizing interviews taken from over 600 hours of footage, and peppered with extraordinary Star Wars and Indiana Jones recreations lovingly immortalized in song, needlepoint, Lego, claymation, puppets and paper-mâché, above all this film asks the question: who truly owns that galaxy far, far away—the man who created it, or the fans who worship it?”

Well, we’ll be there this Sunday at the Cape Ann to witness the battle between fans and fearless leader. We’d love the support of some fellow sci-fiers so make the trek to Gloucester and join us — we fans need to stick together! Take a sneak peek at the trailer below … you’ll see what we mean:

In May 1977, the greatest science fiction film ever made had one heck of an historic movie debut. This film starred relative unknowns Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, a dashing onscreen hero-adventurer, Harrison Ford, and a legendary British stage and screen actor, Alec Guiness. It centered around an interplanetary battle, a classic good versus evil scenario. It broke box office records, made millions in product merchandise, and created super Hollywood stars out of the entire cast. Today, it remains the most beloved and possibly the most recognized film in movie history, spawning spoofs, conventions, extraordinary merch collectors and a billion dollar cinematic franchise of films by its director George Lucas. No matter what you think of Episodes I-III, they’ve earned the famed Lucas a pretty nice sum of cash.

On Tuesday, August 9, you’re invited to join us on the green grass outside the C.W. Morey School in Lowell to enjoy a FREE outdoor screening of the classic 1977 version of Star Wars! Again, this is the ORIGINAL theatrical version — the TRUE classic — without all the later George Lucas CGI add ons. We hope you’ll bring your friends, family, and neighbors, and come dressed in your best Star Wars-inspired intergalactic garb. If you’re game, bring your favorite piece of movie memorabilia for a show and tell with the crowd!

This family-friendly film screening is presented as part of National Night Out in Lowell in partnership with the Lowell Highlands Neighborhood Group, the Lowell Alliance for Families and Neighborhoods and the Lowell Police Department. We’re QUITE excited to be a part of National Night Out once again!

Till then, May The Force continue to be strong with you — see you on Tuesday!

“Star Wars,” “Twilight,” and “Harry Potter” screen outdoors at Lowell’s LeLacheur Park!

For those not in the know, Lowell has a mighty cool baseball field called Edward LeLacheur Park (locally known as “LeLacheur Park”) that is home to the Lowell Spinners, the official Class A affiliate team to the Boston Red Sox since 1996. All Spinners players are drafted and/or signed by the Boston Red Sox with some even making their way to the pro-team. For Sox fans, the Spinners offer “the taste of the game” right here in Lowell, and for a millionth of the cost. With ticket prices maxing out at about $10, seeing the Spinners on a hot summer night is one of the most cost-efficient and flat-out fun things a family can do. We’re big fans as well, and are long overdue for a good game.

The LFC got a great tip a few weeks ago courtesy of our good friend (and stellar photographer) Anne Ruthmann: outdoor summer movies at LeLacheur Park are on the way! The events are courtesy of “Spinnertainment,” the cool pre- and post-game activities that take place on the field at any given game. In the next two months, the Park will bring outdoor film to its “jumbo-tron” screen — officially the Pepsi Video Board — for folks to enjoy once the game is over. There are THREE films on the way on select Saturday nights after the baseball games, so snag those highly affordable tickets and mark your calendars for the following:

Saturday, July 31: “STAR WARS”
From the Spinnertainment schedule page: “Star Wars Day” with all your favorite Star Wars characters. Be careful as you enter as Storm Troopers guard the gates! After the game, bring blankets and come out on the field as the Spinners will show the movie Star Wars on the Pepsi Video Board. Pre-game, check out an incredible Tae Kwon Do display and a Scratch Card Giveaway presented by Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union. A chance to win some great prizes! After the game, kids can play catch in the outfield. Blue Dog Group presents Jumping Jack Flash the Frisbee Dog.

Saturday, August 14: “TWILIGHT”
From the Spinnertainment schedule page: It’s “Twilight Night!” After the game bring blankets and come out on the field as the Spinners will show the movie Twilight on the Pepsi Video Board.
