“If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” screens this Thursday at Pollard Library’s Independent Film Night

IF I WANT TO WHISTLE, I WHISTLE
Thursday, July 14 @ 6:30PM
Pollard Memorial Library
401 Merrimack Street, Lowell
Free admission!

If you’re in the Lowell area, an indie/foreign film buff, and it’s the second Thursday of the month, it’s pretty much your lucky day. Every second Thursday of the month at 6:30PM, arthouse film fans are treated to a FREE independent film at Pollard Library, courtesy of the Friends of the Pollard Library and the library’s partnership with Film Movement. Directed by Florin Serban, If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle hails from Romania and is Serban’s first feature film. It was Romania’s official submission to the 2011 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and has been the recipient of much acclaim in the film festival circuit, particularly in Europe.

Be sure to stay in touch with the Pollard Library about this event and all their other offerings, including their Thursday Indie Film Nights — visit the Pollard blog at PollardMLibrary.blogspot.com and kindly friend them on Facebook. We’ve also included a handy ‘button’ on our own homepage (see right) as a little reminder of their monthly film offerings. Be sure to express your thanks to the good folks at the Pollard, in particular their Community Planning Librarian, Sean Thibodeau, an LFC supporter, native Lowellian, and fellow film devotee (thanks for helping to bring great film to Lowell, Sean!)

February Independent Film Night @ the Pollard

Lowell’s Pollard Memorial Library keeps the good film mojo going with their monthly Independent Film Night. Next month’s film joins the PML’s list of high quality, under the radar indie gems.

We hope to see you next month at the Pollard for the following flick:

BenX (93 mins, not rated)
Thursday, February 12 / 6:30 PM
Pollard Memorial Library
401 Merrimack Street, Lowell

BenXBen is different. His life is a universe all to itself, where he avidly plays his favorite on-line computer game in an attempt to train for and block out the reality of his daily experiences. Ben has Asperger’s Syndrome, a mild form of autism that prevents normal communication and makes him ideal fodder for all the school bullies. As the bullies’ relentless attacks push him over the edge and out of control, his on-line dream girl, Scarlite, appears to him and helps him devise a perfect plan to confront the bullies and make them pay for their torment.

Belgian director Nic Balthazar makes his dazzling debut and blends fantasy and harsh social realism, based on a true story, to bring us an utterly original and important film. (Fun fact: Balthazar was a former theater and film critic before stepping behind the camera).
