Antony Lane's Twitter page is bursting with support and indie film passion!

British indie filmmaker Antony Lane uses Twitter. A LOT. According to his Twitter profile, Lane has been on Twitter 24/7 since 2009 doing fan fundraising for his zombie/horror film Invasion of the Not Quite Dead. With over 86,000 followers, Lane’s efforts seem to have proven successful as updates have just been released that the film crew is scouting for locations to begin shooting.

To people like us who relish the indie film scene, Lane’s goal is a precious one: to produce the first COMPLETELY Twitter fan-funded horror film. His pleas for donations ignite the reader with mixed caps to stress importance, are intensely frequent, and always read with passionate urgency –“if theres any SUPPORTERS OF FILMMAKERS chasing their dreams ONLINE right now, please check out my FILM PROJECT” and “PLS KEEP those DONATIONS/UPGRADES coming in to my film ‘INVASION OF THE NOT QUITE DEAD’, we are 100% twitter fan funded.” We adore this zest, and continue to be wowed by the seemingly endless supply of energy and enthusiasm that Lane displays to the public. But when you’re trying to reach a monetary goal for your life’s dream, that’s pretty much what it takes.

With all that being said, we’d love nothing more than for you to go out to Antony Lane’s Twitter page and project website and experience his determination first hand. And please feel free to support his campaign, especially if the horror genre is your bag. But no matter the end product (and we’re certain it’s gonna be mighty entertaining), Lane has brought the importance of independent film and the ongoing power of social media to the forefront. He’s also allowing all of us to play a part in his dream, and that’s a very special thing indeed.

UK journalist Neil White enjoys a crunchy movie snack.

We’re huge fans of the wonderful Neil White, though we’ve never met and never spoken. Well, by phone at least. The wonder of Twitter brought us together as it has so many millions of film buffs the world over. Neil is a special guy — in 2011, his goal was to watch EVERY FILM released in the UK that year. And not just watch them, but throw in his two cents on the flicks as well via his movie review blog. Now renamed everyfilmin2012 to reflect the new year, Neil’s site is up and running with the first 20+ films already there and reviewed. Below is Neil’s introduction to the 2012 project, taken straight off his blog:

“So, here it is, boys and girls, the 2012 challenge to see every film released in the UK. Last year, I wasn’t really prepared for the quest so pretty much winged it for the first month. This resulted in me being to far behind when I got a game plan together. I intend this year to be different. Fortunately, I am now known to quite a lot of movie folk and they are helpful in sending me more and more screeners (preview DVDs). Without these, everyfilm would fail. Anyway, last year I wasn’t quite clear on my parameters, so here’s my rules and regs this time:

- Any film which is released in the UK and appears at any cinema for more than three days must be seen.
- I will continue to review one-off screenings, if I see them but one-offs will not count on the must-see list.
- I will also attempt to get DVD recordings of movies which have appeared without sub-titles so I can give reviews later in the year. They will, however, not appear on the not-seen list.

All clear? Well, maybe not, but I can assure you of a blog with more reviews of new releases than any other in the UK. However, do not fret if you want to read a release of a 2011 film…they are still available on everyfilmin2011.com
So away we go…enjoy the ride.”

The final chapter of the award-winning trilogy of documentaries on accused killers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley will air this Thursday at 9PM on HBO. Known as the West Memphis 3, Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelley were freed last summer after spending 18 years in prison. Their story was passionately told in two films, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders and Robin Hood Hills (1996) and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000) — this week’s airing of Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory — directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, creators of the first two films – marks the cinematic end to the story and the closing of this haunting case.

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory premiered to the public at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival in its original form, but was then lengthened by 12 minutes to include the stunning verdict of innocent after the men were freed. According to the film’s official site, the West Memphis 3 were given a round of applause and a standing ovation at the New York  Film Festival where the longer version was screened to an audience of 1200 supportive fans. This was their first public appearance together since their departure from the Arkansas courthouse.

Indie cult film/off-beat comedy duo Jay & Silent Bob (Jason “Jay” Mewes and actor-director Kevin Smith) are partnering with Fathom Events to present Kevin Smith: Live From Behind Featuring Jay and Silent Bob Get Old — this is a one-night only, 3-hour event on Thursday, February 2 with Smith and Mewes hosting their popular podcast (or SModcast as they call it), followed by a live-stream Q&A session with fans. It’s an interactive audience experience due to hit 300 cinemas simultaneously that allows fans to be part of the show by submitting questions to Smith and Mewes via social media.

Don’t know who Jay & Silent Bob are? This brief routine will help define the act:

Yeah, it’s not for everyone, but trust us, they have a legion of loyal followers. We had a terrific time seeing Kevin Smith in person at the Boston premiere of his newest film, Red State, dare I say one of our favorite flicks of 2011 due mostly to Michael Parks’ riveting performance. Smith did his best to field questions, but seemed to get caught up in his own diatribe — but no matter, he was a fabulous entertainer and all of us were into it. He has a way of sweeping you up into his cluttered, passionate head. Be warned, chances are, Jay and Silent Bob will have no filter!

We take great joy in promoting our good friend Rob Newton up in Gloucester at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. Not only is Rob one of the hardest working people to ever own a movie theater, but his passion and love for what film can do for a community is second to none. OSCAR NOMINEE VISITING CAPE ANN DEC. 28
John Sayles presents his new film “Amigo” and meets the fans

[December 19, 2011 * Gloucester, MA] – The Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester will host two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker John Sayles and his partner, Maggie Renzi, on Wednesday, December 28th at 7:30pm. Sayles and Renzi will personally present their new film, Amigo, and stay for a Q&A after the film, hosted by local film producer Sarah Green.

This is the 17th feature film from Sayles, and it stars legendary Filipino actor Joel Torre as Rafael, a village mayor caught in the murderous crossfire of the 1899 Philippine-American War. When U.S. troops occupy his village, Rafael comes under pressure from a tough-as-nails officer (Chris Cooper) to help the Americans in their hunt for Filipino guerilla fighters. But Rafael’s brother (Ronnie Lazaro) is the head of the local guerillas, and considers anyone who cooperates with the Americans to be a traitor. Rafael quickly finds himself forced to make the impossible, potentially deadly decisions faced by ordinary civilians in an occupied country. A powerful drama of friendship, betrayal, romance and heartbreaking violence, Amigo is a page torn from the untold history of the Philippines, and a mirror of today’s unresolvable conflicts.

“Occupy Cinema: An open collective harnessing the moving image to aid the worldwide occupation movement.”

Inspired by the Occupy movement, Occupy Cinema is getting in on the game by taking the beauty and power of moving pictures to the streets by projecting on any surface they can find, from buildings, to abandoned property, to statues. Most recently on December 6, they found themselves in the heart of New York City’s Wall Street with a projection and performance program at Wall Street’s historic icon, the Charging Bull. They even released a viral teaser video promoting the event, which got picked up by blogs a’ plenty, including Indiewire and Huffington Post:

But Occupy Cinema’s movement doesn’t stop at public, guerilla-style performance and protest — on January 7 & 8, they’re partnering with NYC’s Anthology Film Archives to screen films related to the International Occupy Movement, including Peter Whitehead’s The Fall. Folks who attend these events will also see the full footage taken from the Charging Bull event and Travis Wilkerson’s An Injury to One. We’ll never know how long the Occupy movement will last, or its impact. But the fact that it has inspired filmmakers, performers, and projection artists to get more cinema to the masses is an incredible thing in itself. We’ll definitely be keeping up with Occupy Cinema, most especially their NYC happenings, for as long as the movement will allow. Occupy Cinema, indeed!

There’s absolutely NO shortage of great indie film projects out there, especially among the hundreds of IndieGoGo and Kickstarter ideas in queue. One of these impressive film artists seeking our collective financial support is Alexia Anastasio, whose current documentary Adventures in Plymptoons! showcases the brilliant work of Academy Award nominee, animator, and filmmaker Bill Plympton. We had the extreme pleasure of meeting both Anastasio and Plympton in person this weekend at a screening their film at Gloucester’s Cape Ann Community Cinema. This dynamic duo won us over with their exuberance and charm and of course it was a thrill for Suzz to finally meet Plympton — an artist she’s followed and adored since his late 80s debut — in person. She did her best not to gush.

Alexia Anastasio -- the reds have it!

We invite you to check out Anastasio’s current documentary project Ginger Girls: The Secret Lives of Redheads, which now has fiscal sponsorship via Fractured Atlas and is accepting donations under the name “I Believe Productions.” A self-proclaimed freckle-faced “ginger” herself, Anastasio will interview and photograph 500 girls from around the world, all of whom are blessed with natural red hair, in the hopes of capturing their personal stories (their “trials and tribulations of love, youth and successes,” according to Anastasio) and learning what separates these feisty, beautiful lasses from the rest of the gals. The Lowell Film Collaborative sends VERY Happy Thanksgiving wishes to each and every one of you! We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended a Lowell film screening or who conveyed their support through kind words, generous donations, or by helping to publicize our Mill City movie mission. We hope you enjoy spending this day with good people, great food, AND terrific film!

As for us, we’ll be enjoying our first all vegan Thanksgiving dinner with our favorite homemade sides, dessert, and a fabulous ‘turkey’ courtesy of Cafe Indigo in Concord, NH. We also have some great film plans we have as well, including the Cape Ann Film Festival taking place throughout the weekend in Gloucester, MA, at the Cape Ann Community Cinema and The Cape Ann (“The Annie”). Our good friend and film supporter Rob Newton — owner & operator of the CACC — has curated quite an incredible fest as well as some terrific post-fest screenings, including a LIVE guest appearance by director John Sayles at the local premiere of his latest film Amigo. We just barely snagged our tickets for tomorrow night’s (Friday’s) showing of Take Shelter with a post-film Q&A with producer Sarah Green. Though that event is currently sold out, you’ll be able to catch Take Shelter on Sunday and later in the week (sans Q&A).

Finally, you’ve probably read our past post on the MARVELOUS French produced film The Artist starring Jean Dujardin and Berinice Bejo — for us, the anticipation of the U.S. release of this film has been intense. The wait is over, though, as The Artist premieres THIS FRIDAY, November 25. Joy! We had the privilege of seeing this remarkable 2011 Cannes festival favorite at Cinema Utopia during our recent holiday in France. This trendy, cafe-sporting cinema in the heart of Bordeaux absolutely charmed us, as did seeing The Artist with a French crowd. GO SEE THIS FILM — you’ll be positively delighted and immersed in cinematic nostalgia.

In addition to these great flicks, we’ll no doubt break out the Netflix Instant and peruse some other titles before the weekend is over. We hope your holiday festivities includes some of your own favorite titles — ENJOY, and a very Happy Thanksgiving!

This past July, we had the pleasure of getting a sneak preview of the remarkable documentary Paul Goodman Changed My Life at the Maine International Film Festival in Waterville, ME. We’re excited to hear that the film will be showing at 6PM this Thursday, November 3, at the Coolidge Corner Theatre as part of the 23rd Annual Boston Jewish Film Festival. As he was at our screening of the film in July, director/producer Jonathan Lee will be present for Friday’s screening, a real treat for anyone in attendance.

ABOUT THE FILM
Paul Goodman was once so ubiquitous in the American zeitgeist that he merited a “cameo” in Woody Allenʼs Annie Hall. Author of legendary bestseller Growing Up Absurd (1960), Goodman was also a poet, 1940s out queer (and family man), pacifist, visionary, co-founder of Gestalt therapy — and a moral compass for many in the burgeoning counterculture of the ‘60s. “Paul Goodman Changed My Life” immerses you in an era of high intellect (that heady, cocktail-glass juncture that Mad Men has so effectively exploited) when New York was peaking culturally and artistically; when ideas, and the people who propounded them, seemed to punch in at a higher weight class than they do now. Using a treasure trove of archival multimedia — selections from Goodmanʼs poetry (read by Garrison Keillor and Edmund White); quotes from Susan Sontag, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Noam Chomsky; plentiful footage of Goodman himself; plus interviews with his family, peers and activists — director/producer Jonathan Lee and producer/editor Kimberly Reed (Prodigal Sons) have woven together a rich portrait of an intellectual heavyweight whose ideas are long overdue for rediscovery.

He’ll be glad to regale you with stories of his research on Goodman’s life, and most especially on his family. As stated in the film’s trailer, Paul Goodman is quite possibly “the most influential man you’ve never heard of,” which makes Jonathan Lee one of the most influential filmmakers you’ve never heard of. Kudos to the Boston Jewish Film Festival for including this documentary in their program.

“Indie Film at its Peak.” This is a perfectly appropriate and catchy tag line for the impressive Williamstown Film Festival, a celebration of independent film at Williamstown’s Images Cinema and the Cinema Lounge within the breathtaking ‘art campus’ at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), a must-see gallery space in North Adams. The 2-weekend Fest, which began on October 21, continues this Thursday – Saturday, October 27 – 29. We here at the Lowell Film Collaborative feel like true compadres of the Fest now that we know about the WFF’s origins — turns out this stellar 13-year old event began as a small concept shared by a passionate few in the community. The Williamstown Film Festival was founded in 1998 to fill a cultural gap in a part of Massachusetts known for its world-class museums, theater, music, and dance – the Berkshires. Because film seemed the missing link in an artistically rich region, some two dozen local residents and graduates of Williams College felt strongly that a film festival could bridge the gap. After many meetings, the Williamstown Film Festival was incorporated as a non-profit organization and began planning. The goal was tripartite: (a) to honor America’s film past in the shape of classics, (b) celebrate the present day through panels, seminars, and q-and-a’s between audiences and the actors, writers, directors and producers of indie film, and (c) explore the new technologies which are carrying the art of film into the 21st century.

Our hats off to this thriving film community, which we had the pleasure of visiting this past spring. We encourage you to check out the Williamstown Film Festival Calendar for what’s up next and see their impressive array of screenings, special guests AND special events, which includes a Closing Night Salute to Sidney Lumé and After Party. The October 29 event will be attended by the famed director’s daughter, screenwriter Jenny Lumet, and many other guests. What a great way to close out a Fest!

The Berkshires are absolutely stunning in the fall, so hopefully there are some brilliant leaves still left on the trees. If your upcoming weekend doesn’t involve tricks or treats, make the trek to the Williamstown/North Adams area and spend some quality time with fellow filmies, and be sure to save time for exploring the vast galleries within MASS MoCA. Prepare to be amazed!
